Toy Story CostumesThe Toy Story franchise is owned by Disney, the first movie of which was released in 1995, the sequel in 1999, and the third movie in the franchise has been slated for release in 2010.  It was one of the first major movies that used computer graphics and it won recognition for Pixar.  The franchise, appropriately enough, revolves around the adventures and misadventures of a group of toys owned by a kid named Andy.  These toys come to life when their owner is not around, kind of like a “when the cat is away, the mice will play” theme.  Each toy has a personality and their interactions are quite similar to real people, with the exception of being more cartoony.  The first film and second film have won acclaim, and as many Disney films, presented valuable moral lessons.  Tons of tie-in merchandise have been manufactured and marketed, among these the Toy Story costumes.

Not everyone in the Toy Story Gang is suitable for costumery – after all, there are quite a few non-anthropomorphic characters.  Luckily, the franchise’s main protagonists are very costume-conducive.

Woody CostumeWoody, the pull-string cowboy sheriff toy is pretty much what you’d expect him to be.  Costumes based on the character are of the generic cowboy style: jeans, shirt, boots, and hat.  The Woody costume has many identifying characteristics that make it instantly identifiable: a plaid shirt, red neckerchief, cow-print vest, ostentatious belt buckle, and boots with stitched cartoon cactus pattern.  Of course, one mustn’t forget his sheriff’s star and cowboy hat!  The costume is made as a jumpsuit, for easy wearing.  In the movie, Woody Pride was the de facto leader of the toys, being the most senior of the lot and Andy’s favorite since kindergarten.  He’s prideful, just like his name, but he genuinely cares for his fellow toys and takes measures to keep them safe.

Buzz Lightyear is a space ranger toy, and so his costume pretty much revolves around a high-tech look.  His main colors are white, green, and purple, with white making up the largest expanses, green for trim, and purple for his head covering.  His look consists of a full-body space suit, with a chest plate-slash-control panel, service insignias, and a winged jetpack.  Some implementations of this costume have the chest plate separate, while others have the chest plate printed onto the cloth.  In the first movie, he starts out thinking he is a real space ranger, only to Buzz Lightyear Costumerealize that he is a toy later on.  Originally, his arrival threw Woody’s position as Andy’s favorite into jeopardy, and consequently Woody’s role as room leader was endangered.  Jealous of the attention, Woody tries to Jessie Costumesfind some way to lower Buzz’s profile, but after a series of accidents and eventual reuniting, Woody and Buzz become best friends and lead the room together, as is typical of many Disney films.

Joining the gang in Toy Story 2 is Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl.  Similar to Woody, her costume is designed to evoke that Wild Wild West look but with a cartoony twist.  She wears a blouse with large cuffs and detailed shoulders, jeans, belt, and cow-print chaps, plus a hair bow and a red cowgirl hat to top it off.  She plays the peppy and excitable cowgirl sidekick to Woody, but she does have a sad past, having been left when her owner outgrew her.  Those who have not watched the movie might mistakenly believe she is romantically related to Woody, which is not the case.  Woody and Jessie share a more sibling-like relationship.  Woody is in fact linked to Bo Peep (a porcelain figure based on the shepherdess of nursery rhyme fame), while Jessie shares a similar relationship with the shy and rather awkward Buzz Lightyear.

Parents will love the fact that these costumes are hand-washable or machine-washable, which is just perfect since some kids get dirty a lot.  Just remember to exclude any parts with electronics!
